Ghana’s New 2026 Vehicle Number Plate Unveiled

The Executive Director of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Julius Neequaye Kotey, has unveiled the first sample of Ghana's new vehicle registration plate set to be introduced in 2026.

According to a post made by the Executive Director on Monday, August 25, 2025, the new plate comes with a significant upgrade in vehicle regulation and security, featuring advanced RFID technology and other modern features.

Visible features of the new plate, as showcased in the sample, include a regional name for the region of registration, a combination of a vehicle's unique identity number merged with an area code "GRI" (e.g., 2301-GR1), replacing the traditional year of registration for easier identification.

The sample also features a slogan of the region of registration embossed beneath the registration number.

"The introduction of a new number plate system is a significant step forward for vehicle regulation and security. The new plates will be equipped with RFID technology and other features to modernise vehicle management and improve road safety," he wrote.

He outlined some key benefits of the new plate, including enhanced security to prevent smuggling by linking plates to a central database, improved tracking through RFID chips for law enforcement, and seamless toll collection with automated payments.

He added that the new plate will feature a reflective design to ensure better visibility, with digital integration aimed at reducing fraud and human error in vehicle management.

He, however, clarified that the sample, including its design and security features, is subject to modification ahead of its final rollout in January 2026.
